How do Primal Dread character unlocks work?

Primal Dread adds ten characters with the DLC. Unlock rules are not republished in Steam news; read each locked portrait’s challenge text in the character select screen.

The Steam store page lists 10 New characters. The launch long post asks you to discover most potatoes yourself and spotlights a few favorites. Patch v1.2.0.1 names Survivor in balance notes only.

Achievements separated from the base game

The launch post notes new achievements separated from the base game thanks to a Steam feature—your existing base-game completion is not reset when DLC achievements appear. Evil Empire does not enumerate each achievement in that post.

Optional shortcut: Unlock All (New Dawn)

The New Dawn update announcement (October 2025) added three save profiles. On a profile you can unlock every item, character, weapon, and Danger level; doing so deactivates earning achievements on that profile (you still earn them the hard way on another profile).

That shortcut is separate from Primal Dread’s challenge unlocks. It can let you try Jungle or Evolution routes on a sandbox profile while you work through requirements on your main save.

Practical tips while you hunt unlocks

Read the character card on the select screen—greyed portraits should show requirement progress.
Enable the Primal Dread Item Set if you turned DLC off via Item Set.
Avoid outdated mods after Update 1.2—they can hide roster entries or corrupt saves.
